HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY. OCTOBER 12th

Tli© Council held the usual meeting at 7.30 o’clock. Present—Messrs G-. A. Perry (Mayor), 11. M. Coulson, G. Wood, D. J. Evans, AY. Jeffries, AY. D. -Maekay, J. Lloyd, G. Heinz, and JKing. An apology was made for tho nbsenco of Mr Perham.

The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence was approved. INAVARD CORR-ESPONDENGE.

From H. Linklater, stating the pipe drain, under Park Street, was blocked and asking for attention.—Received and referred to the Public AVorks Committee to attend to.

From Magistrate’s Court, notifying £ll 10s fees, lines and penalties for last- quarter.—Reoeivod. From American Consular Office, Wellington thanking Council for supplying map of Hokitika, as requested.—Received . From Tomlinson and (Jiftord quoting for installing electric light in Town Hall at £42 Id.—Received, and referred to Public Works Committee, with power to act. From Board of Health forwarding a requisition, calling on Council to foilaulnte a weekly seivico for collecting of refuse for the residential portion and daily service for business portion of the town. —Received. The Mayor >;ud the proposal seemed a big order. It seemed to bo putting on the Council an expense out of proportion to (■lie size- of the town. It would mean expenditure of £2-30 to £3OO a year. He moved th e letter he referred to the Public Works Committee, to report. Seconded by Mr Coulson. He thought it, would and could he easily carried out with their own horse and drav. Mr Heinz supported the proposal and said the time was coining when it would pay to have, a second horse and dray. The motion was agreed to.

From Treasurer reporting receipts £-199 5s lOd; payments £O-10 55.; debit balance £389 Is lid.—Received, Accounts amounting to £723 17s 2d were passed for payment. Mr Coulson (Chairman of the Finance Committee) drew attention to the fact that the debit balance- of the general account was over £9OO. A formal motion was pasted authorising the working of the Public. AAoiks loan, with the Bank of N.Z.

Mr Heinz (Chairman of Public AVorks Committee) reported that after fuitlici consideration he wished to move that the motion in reference to kerbing landed street in wood lie rescinded, and that that portion of Tailored Street between AYeld and Hamilton streets be carried out in concrete.—Seconded by Mr Coulson and carried. Mr Heinz moved that in future only 1 each gravel be used lor the roads, as this was the only suitable one. Seconded bv Mr Lloyd and earned. Mr Heinz moved that necessary repairs be effected to the inside of the Town Clock. Seconded by All Coulson and carried. From Manager of the Abattoirs (Mr J Jarman reporting for September. Dicre were examined, 11 cows, 10 boilers. 83 bullocks, 210 sheep. 4 lambs. 5 pigs. 2 calves. Condemned, 1 cow, bullock. Fees for period £O2 12s 6d.— Received. Mi Kvaus reported oil a visit to the cemetery, that there was about £1 < required to complete the clearing work on the west side, that some sections set apart for reserves could be utilised for graves, and suggesting that approval tie oileu to this course, that a niimlicr of pipes were required and that 1 1,0-e should be supplied.- Received and agreed to.

Mr Evans moved : —- Thar with a view to encouraging Die loyalty and assiduity of the staff in relation to Borough affairs, and m L hc absence of a superannuation scheme for the employees, the Council determine to institute a savings movement for the men employed by contributing :i stipulated sum in relation to sen ice and salai'v by way of quarterly payments to be lodged to individual credit in the savings bank and as the funds accumulate to purchase for the employees Government post-dated bonds which are to be interest bearing and retained in Hie safe custody of the Council, and to be- administered as the Council mav from-time to time determine; that to give effect to the toregoing. a special committee be sec up L report. .such committee to consist oi Os .Jeffries. Borough reserves showing the situation, •iroa term and annual rental of those occupied; and abo the situation and area of those reserves- unlot. Seconded by the Mayor and carried. The other notices of motion were held over. The Council rose at S._u l>-m.
