WEST COAST COAL MINES
EM PLOVERS' ACTION. WELLINGTON. Get. with icspcet to the present mining dispute in Westland, the Ministei of Labour, the Hon. G..J. Ander-oii seated to-day that the advice ol the Law Officers of the Crown had been obtained upon the question as to w hetlier either party to the dispute had committed a breach of the law. Their opinion is that tlie employers have not committed a broach relating to lock-outs to constitute tut offence. T mler the Act. employers must suspend their business with intent to compel the workers fo
agree to terms of employment or to ,-omplv with any demands made upon them by the employers. The eoalhewers were, in fact, dismissed for a breach of Clause 39 of the award ot the Court, which expressly gives the right to the employers to so dismiss them. As regards the men. the opinion states that thev have contravened both the provisions of the Act- relating to strikes as going slow clearly comes within the definition of a strike, and the specific provision contained in the award forbidding the ndontion of a goslow policy.
