There were over SI) players competing for the valuable piize> oHe red, and after keen competition the Indies’ first prize was won by Airs AY. Keller, and the second by Airs A. Sumner. The first gent’s prize was won by -Mr AY. Hall and the second by Afr Fitzpatrick. The ■winners of the lucky table were Airs H. Fitzgerald, Airs I. Rrown, Aliss A. Daly and AllRaw lings. Airs F. Saxon supplied the music for the dance, which was largely attended, and under the direction of Air E. Kearns as AI.C.
The visiting officials of the fanu’i-buiy-M’ustlaml branch ol the Navy League entertained last evening at Preston's tea rooms, the members ol tln- local branch ami their friends, when a social time was passed. Ihe Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) who was accompanied by Mrs Perry, presided. Among those present wore the Hon 1L L. Michel and Mrs Michel. Mr 'I. W . Duff (County Chairman) and Mrs Hoi, Mr 11. M. Coulson, Deputy Mavor, Mr T. Irvine (Rector of \ ietoria School) and Mrs Irvine, ami several others. Short addresses were given liv the Mayor, Hon Mr Michel, Mr T. \V. Unite, and Mr Walton IS.A. (Navy League lecturer). Several vocal items wert' contributed. Among the soloists were Misses Itrmc. Roglc. Cillooly, Davidson, Messrs I). Wallace, L. Aldridge, J. IL Ward. Miss Giese, Mrs Carver and Mr Joyce were the accompanists. Supper was served shortly before ten. when general conversation was indulged in. The Grey "Argus" says that three Chinamen were much put out yesterday when two young men, M illiam Gordon Reitl and I‘rederick M iliiams. both from the (Him line started "to clean them up." The Chinamen. Ah Voting. C how John and Tip May. weio allegedly assaulted with a table leg and two pairs ol lists and as a result, exhibited a woe-hegone appearance when Constables J. Greenless and L. •T. Brazier, having captured the two, men. bad time to survey- their battered countenances and house. ’Mord was received at the Police - Station at IMo p.m., that a fracas had broken out in the Chinese cook shop of Ah Young, on the corner of Ashton Dane and Johnston Street. On the arrival oT the police the two men who were believed to have started the trouble, made a run to escape. Reid was quioklv captured, but Williams made off along Ashton’s Lane and, jumping
a fence there, took refuge amongst some scrap iron in a yard. Constable Greenless, who chased him down the lane, followed over the fence and effected his arrest. One window ill the Chinamen's house had been broken by a thrown bottle, a table leg had been pulled off and used on their heads and fists had been froelv used. The two young men will appear in Court tins morning charged with assault and mischief.

Last week a Runangu housewife sent live shillings and a slumped addressed envelope in answer to an advertisement of a sure method of getting rid of superfluous fat. Boring operations, which have been in progress at Taylorvilie lor eight weeks past, have resulted in a seam of four feet thickness being pierced at a depth of FSHti. This seam is one known in mining circles as the ''Brunner Rider.” It is not a class of coal That could he described as good, being something like a brown coal in appearance. This in itself would never justify boring, but, as an indicator, it i- ,i guide to the main seam that is now demons)iably co-oxtensivo with the whole valley in the Bi'iiuner locality Tiie borer (in charge of Air A\ arburtiin) bad to pierce about another dozer feet beyond the rider, through hard solid grit, to reach the main seam yesterday. This it did at the depth exactly of 002 ft. Continuing, it proved the seam to be a dozen feet through. The coal proves to he one ol I lie best sort that has been obtained i'l the H'unned districts. It is the same as the old Coal Pit Heath kind that years ago was so popular with those needing steam fuel and gas coal.
