“The coal miners have absolutely no hope of holding out much longer.” said a Grevmoutli authority. He stated that the financial assistance forthcoming was not lienrlv sufficient to enable tho miners and their dependants to live. The watersiders were one strong hodv of workers which had not supported the miners’ exchequer, and the generosity of the storekeepers in supplying goods “on tick” "as now being severely strained. The residents of Hari Ilnri and M ntaroa arranged that the school children should plnv a return football match at Wat area on Sept. 29th. The game was very exciting throughout. The visitors proved too superior and "on by 3 points to nil. Messrs McKay and Ford were in charge of the Hari Hari boys and Mr Sutherland was referee. Tbe death took place yesterday of Mr •). IU Prendergast of lkamatua. He was 77) years of ago, and a native ol County Mayo, Ireland. In 1872 he arrived in Lyttelton after a short period spent in Canterbury, came to the Coast and subsequently took up land at lkamatua, where he has remained ever since. Mr Prendorgast who was one of the original directors ol the Totaru. Flat Dairy Factory Company, and a director of the Greymouth Fresh Food and Ire Compny, leaves lour sons and four daughters.
While at Frnuktou last week the Minister of Railways (the Hon J. (!• Coates), visited tho Railway Dept.’s house const ruction factory. Ihe factory and sawmill have been built on a site of thirty acres on the north-west-ern side of the Frnnkton station. Ihe mill, for breaking timber down from the log to the rough lengths, has been in operation for about a fortnight, while the plant for dressing timber, preparing joinery, and doing the plumbing work required, lias been working for nearly a year. The Department’s aim is to construct -160 Houses a year. At present the output is about a house per day. Already 229 houses have been built. Ol this number thirty-eight have been erected at Frnnkton and forty-two are in course of construction in tins locality ; thirty ate at Martou, twenty-live at Taumaramii. tewnty at Oliakuue and others are at Taihnpo and other stations in the North. The majority are ol live - ooms, and the average cost at the present time has been C 709. or £209 less than the cost a year ago. Timber supplies are secured from the Department’s own bush at Maniaku. There was a convivial evening in the annexe of the Soldiers’ Hall last eiening, when the R.S.A. Minstrels farewelled Mr Don Wallace, who is leaving to-morrow for Sydney. Mr L. Aldridge presided over a very harmonious gathering, and with music, song, and story, the evening passed very pleasantly. There wore many “quips and cranks and wanton wiles,” the gathering being a vorv jolly one. Mr Joyce presided at the piano and assisted very erratic with the varied musical cvenwhich resulted.
