•Mr I'. Irvine said that he generally •supported Air Michel’s remarks, and thought he could promise to bring along the senior hoys who would be able to have a clean-up day oil the beach and start the movement.

Hughes, representing the Arts Committee of the Exhibition, to eonsuit with the Council in reference to the housing of n number of pie-tilr«s of great value. Dr. Teiclieltnanii said they had conic to ask if there was any possibility oi obtaining the use of some rooms in the Free Public Library, riiev would require the use of the Lwo limit rooms of the Library, but they recognised that it would uoce-sitaic the closing of the present reading rooms.

From Hokitika Beautifying Association stating the Council's 100 lords of gravel had been supplied on Cass Square and the Association had supplied 170 loads and requesting the Council to supply a further ICO loads which would, enable the work to bo completed. I he minutes were confirmed and out"aril correspondence approved. deputation. A deputation from the Hokitika Beautifying Society, consisting of the Hon. H. J„ Mu-hoi, Messrs S. J. Preston, J. Niven and I. Irvine, waited on the Gunned to discuss the problem ot beach improvement. Hon. IT. L. .Michel referred to the matter and stated as the result of a conference on the beach the previous dav thev recommended that an attempt be made tf? carry out the proposals of the Forestry Department in accordance with the lilan supplied. Mr Michel suggested that the residents ho asked to bring their boundary lencos tu the line mark ed out, and thereby bring a uniform line. 'J hey suggested that the groins proposed lie held over till after the Exhibition. Inn that they should plant out marram grass, limy promised every co-operation by the Society in any movement initiated by the Council, it being recognised that some tittent ion was urgently necessary. They also suggested that the right-of-ways be touted so that drays could not get through without the permission of the Council's officers.
From Westland Hospital Board, applying for crossing to motor garage.— Received: request granted on usual terms. From West Coast Caledonian Society applying tor use of Cass Square for January Ist. Council, viz;— Be Westland Cool Stores and Dairy Coy’s Drainage.—-The distance of the drain required to deal with the drainage from this factory would be 111 chains .50 feet. The number of 2ft. pipes required would be 3,5.5, costing as follows:—Jiu. pipes £10; bin. pips £<>2; 9in. pips? £](!:). Your Committee recommend that the Company he asked to contribute tbe cost of the Jin. pipes, namely £l9; and that the Couni il either put in the Jin. pipes or put Pin. pipes, in the latter ease finding the extra £6O towards the cost, of the pipes.
Re Bealey Street drain.—Your Committee recommend that a Gin. earthenware pipe drain be put in to carry the drainage on the east side of Bealey St. between Hampden and Stafford Streets, distance 8 chains 10 feet, cost of pipes only £SO. Re Davie Street.—Your Committee recommend that an open drain be cut on the east side of Davie Street, for about live chains to drain the sections between Hampden and Stafford Streets. Re Britain Street.—Your Committee recommend that this Street between Weld and Stafford be formed and gravelled out of £<sooo Loan, and that the work bo proceeded with immediately.—Received : considered clause by clause and adopted. AYitli the addition that a drain be cut at the corner of Mr Blank's section : .subject to half payment being agreed to by Air Blank'. It was resolved that Pin. pipes he pulin in Brittnn Street. Air Heinz, further moved that Tailored Street be kerbed with wood, as there was not time to erect in concrete at the present time, and have it finished in time for the exhibition, the work to lie carried out between Hamilton ami Stafford Streets.—Seconded by Air King. Air Coulson objected to wood kerbing. The Council had years ago decided that only concrete kerbing be placed down. The Alayor said in view of Air Heinz’s explanation he would support the propositi. When the question of opening tenders for completion of Rolleston Street was mentioned, Air Coulson objected on the grounds that at last meeting when the tender then opened was declined on the grounds ol tlm high cost, it was resolved to rarrv out the work by dav labor, and the Council had not rescinded that resolution, so he objected to tin- opening of tenders, on the ground of procedure. Air Evans agreed that at the last meeting he had moved that the tender be declined, that, the matter he referred to the Engineer and Overseer to carry out In- tip> labor, on the understanding trutt. the work be earned out. sufficiently to give road access. Ah’ Wood reported that the line work of the caretaker in Maeandrew Square ; bad resulted in there being a very line show of blooms. Ind that last night a

I Mr Frans asked the Council to consider the question of their intentions iu regard to electric light in the Town Hall, ill view of the proposals C temporarily instill electric light for exhibition purposes. Tiic Mayor stated the Council had previously decided to install eletcrie light, but it bad Oceii held over mainly on account of the question of the erection of a new nunioipal hail and theatre. It was re solved that an estimate of the cost of an electric installation be obtained. NOTIC'D OF .AIOTIOX.
