N.Z. MARRIAGES
THEIR MEMBER AND BATE
WELLINGTON. Sept. 22. During the year 1922 (states the annual report by the Government Sta-tic-inn) 9556 marriages were solemnised, corresponding to a rate of 7.G3 per 1900 of mean population. The number of marriages for the year is 1079 less than in 1921. and 2919 less than in 1920. Although in point of numbers the marriages suieniiiised in 1022 are still a long way in advance of ally year prior to 1914. the rate i-. on tile other hand, the lowest recorded since 1899—that is. of course, excluding some of the war years, the aunormal circumstances ruling in those years allonling an obvious explanation of the hnv rates then recorded.
The high figure for 1920 was due to the return of men from the war. coupled with the prosperity of the country. A glance at the quarterly figures for 1920, 1921. and 1922 shows that, in sympathy with economic conditions, marriages continued at a high figure, until about Easter of 1921, and then fell away. The quarterly figures are as follows:
Statistics covering a period of years show that, except when Faster falls in .March, June quarter lias normally the highest number of marriages, followed liy December. .March, and September quarters in that order.
