The Westport Coal Company has dispatched a 501 b block of coal from Denniston and a 501 b. block from Cranny to be shown at iho British Empire Exhibition to be held in London. The analysis of the coal is as follows: —Xo 1 Mine Creek, Millertou —Fixed carbon (5*2.80, hydrogen carbon 34.10, water 1.40, ash 1.20, total 100.00. Total sulphur 0.68 per cent. Xo 2 sample from Kruger Dip. Denniscon—fixed carbon 58.80, hydrogen carbon 38.30. water 2.30. ash 0.40; total. 100.00. Total sulphur 0.55 per cent. Both samples are of hard, bright, pure coal.
On Tuesday evening Mr F. Xewill. secretary of the Itangiora branch ol the Farmers’ Union, attended a meeting of the Borough Council Standing Committee to solicit support for n movement to send an exhibit represeutiitir e of the Hangiorn district to the Westland Exhibition. Mr Xewill state.! that be bad already secured space, and is now only remained for suitable exhibits to be secured. The committee favourably entertained the project, and it was decided that the Mayor should convene a public mooting to furtuot the movement.
Severe burns to the fingers of the rio-ht hand were sustained by a Municipal Electricity Department wireman on Friday at Christchurch when ho came in "contact with a live wire. He was working, with several others, on the overhead wires in Colomlm Street. He commenced to cut the wire over which he was reaching when his hand came in contact with the wire and two shocks passed through his body T.ie pain must have been intense i or his shouts were heard m Gloucester Stieet. y fellow-workmen showed great presence of mind by quickly cutting the wire, the contact thus l>eing broken. The burnt man was brought down to the ground, and was taken to the department’s offices in Manchester Street When seen there, a little time after, ho showed little signs of the accident and he was soon back on the job again.

A fatal accident was narrowly averted yesterday afternoon, at Greymouth, sa \-s the ‘'Argus’’, when a little child (son of Mr Mubin, Bank Manager), to:ldled i n to the railway line, right in front of an onrus'-.ing engine and L. waggon. Shunter P. Callan noticed the child just in time, and rushing on to the line, throw him quickly to one side as the train rushed past. Eyewitnesses of the incident speak highly of Mr Callan’s plucky action.
Speaking in reply to the vote ol thanks at the conclusion of the supper tendered to him by the industrialists of Canterbury on Thursday, the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Hon W. Donnie Stewart, stated that in his main address he had intended to refer to the proposed British and Intercolonial Exhibition to bo held at Hokitika in December next. The Minister acknowledged with apprccalion the remarks made by the Westland delegate, Mr. R. Wild, as to the assistance being afforded by the Government to the exhibition. The Government, lie stated, was very, grateful to learn of tho support already accorded to the exhibition by the manufacturers ol Canterbury, and he wished to congratulate the local association on its enterprise in taking so much space. If other interests took the matter up as enthusiastically there could he no doubt whatever as to the exhibition’s success.
