Tlio Hokitika Beautifying Society holds its monthly meeting at the Town hall to-morrow night lit 7.30 o’clock.
Tlio Exhibition Council meets lit the County Chambers at 7.30 o'clock this evening, when a. quantity of business relating to general preparations will be considered.
Preparations for tlio Buller districtcxlnoit ;it the Hokitika Exhibition are now well forwaid. The exhibit will occupy not less than 350 square feet of spaiVs.
The annual meeting of the Westland Racing Club will be held at .Mclntosh's Club Konni at 8.30 o’clock to-nioriow evening. Subsequent to the general meeting, the new committee will meet to consider the programme for the Exhibition race meeting.
It is understood Mr 11. Jones of the Railway Hotel will be retiring from business about the middle of next month having leased, the well-known hostelry to a new proprietor who hails from Canterbury. Mr Jones will continue to icsidc in Hokitika.

The Bank of New Zealand at Boss, on Park Terrace was badly gutted by lire at 12.3;) o’clock on Friday morning The building was an old one though in fairly good condition. There was no one in.the building at the time of tin - outbreak, tin: limit; only being opened once a fortnight, ami there is no clue to the cause. There was no insurance. The building is practically a wreck.
At a meeting of the committee of the Heeftun Jockey Club held ou Wednesday evening. Mr W. A. Stapleton presiding, the Programme Committee were instructed to draw up a programme for the Midsummer Meeting with stakes totalling £I,BOO, an increase of £l5O on the amount given last Midsummer. It was also decided to cut out the two trotting events from the programme, leaving the eight events open to gallopers. The Grevmoiith amateurs under the leadership of Mr L. AlcGlashan will he stnging the comic opera ‘‘The Toreador’’ during the Christinas and Now Year holidays. The itinerary of the company will include a visit to Hokitika. Miss Madge Wilson of Christchurch will be included in the cast, which will lie one of the strongest yet put- forward by cur northern friends. Mr MeGlashan who had considerable experience under the late Air Tom Pollard, will be the producer of the opera.
The usual weekly euchre tournament will be bold in St. Marys Club Rooms this evening; four valuable prizes arc offered for competition. There will also be a lucky table. A dance will follow, a popular waltz being on the programme. Capital music for the dance; supper provided. Admission Is. Advt.
The Kokntahi Dairy Factory is now taking regular cream supplies, hut at present is oniv churning every four days, so as to enable the completion of the new building and machinery. This is now approaching a finish, and at the end of the next month should be accomplished when it is expected that the factory will be complete enough to last for the next twenty years. The new refrigerating plant just installed uas given a trial run yesterday, and gives every promise of being a distinct success.' The cream is now rapidly increasing in quantity, and the recentwarm weather has improved the feed prospects.

The Elsie from southern ports with a cargo of sheep, arrived in the roadstead but the heavy sea prevented her crossing the bar. To-day there is a very heavy sea and no prospect of working inwards.

The plain and fancy dress ball to be held in tlio new public hall at Kokatalii on Wednesday evening promises to attract a large attendance. Many friends will learn with sincere regret of tlio death ol Mrs White, wile of Mr John AYhite, of Kumara. which occurred last evening at the reside 1 1< e of her daughter. Airs George.Bulger, at Kumara. The deceased, who Imd been ailing for some time was one of the worthiest of West coast pioneers, who, bv her admirable dispositions, won tlio esteem of evervonc. She was a native of County Tipperary. Ireland, and had reached the advanced age of 35 years, 52 of which had been spent in New Zealand, and over 40 at Kumara. Besides her husband, she leaves a son (M r Steve White, of Kumara) and two daughters. (Airs George Burger, of Kumara. and Airs O’Brien, ol Wellington). The funeral takes place at lvuniarn to-morrow morning, leaving ot. Patrick's Church at 10 o’clock for the cemetery.
