Between the hours of 5.30 p.m. on Thursday and 8 a.m. on Friday, a clumsy attempt at burglary was carried out at the premises of Parfitt and Co., grocers, Werita Street. So far as is known, nothing was stolen. When the members of the firm left the shop at 5.30 yesterday, everything was in order. This morning it was found that attempts had been made to open the three windows facing Werita Sricet. The window leading to the office had finally been forced, the use ol some instrument having broken the catch. An endeavour had been made to break open the cash drawer, hut the intruders, judging by their rough work, were very imperfect cracksmen, and the attempt failed. An inspection of the shop had been mode by the visitors, lint apparently they left emptyhanded.—Grey “Star.”

There seems a general concensus of opinion among followers of the Rugby game in Wellington that the New Zealand backs of to-day arc not equal to the All Blacks of past years. There is a difference of opinion as to the merits of the backs of the three different teams which secured victories over the Now South Welshmen. Writing editorially, the “Dominion” says—“As a matter of fact the test matches justended, which were expected to afford a sound guide to the New Zealand selectors who have to pick an All Black team to go lo England next year, failed signally in one respect. In all the matches the New Zealanders were for the most part on the attack and holding an advantage. The strength of the All Blacks as defensive players was not fully tried out. Indeed, there is a suspicion that amongst- the hacks there is a distinct weakness in this particular branch of the game. However, the point might he tested and the difficulties which confront the selectors might l.e lessened if two teams wore picket! from the All Blacks who have just represented the Dominion against our visitors. What a struggle it would he. The hacks of the A team might play bohind the forwards of the B team in the second spell, so that a fair all-round test could he made.”
