Owing to the R.S.A. benefit at Greymouth to-morrow night, the usual weekly euchre tournament- fixed for Thursday night,'will be deferred for a week, when a special night will lie held, and sin additional number of playing tables set in the large hall. At a mooting hold at Groymoutli on Wuiidav it was decided to form a Most Coast ‘Sa "-millers’ Trade Protection Guild. The now organisation will . supersede the old Grcy-Hokitika Sawmillers’ Association, and will embrace the "hole of the sawmilling industry on the West Coast., whereas the Association did not include all the millers. \n executive was appointed ns follows ; —Mr K. J. Bundle, chairman; Messrs D. Tonnent, W. J. Butler, G. Perry, .T. Gilbert, R. IT. Perliam, executive members; and M. -I- Fogarty secretary.
The principal alteration in the grocery trade is the entire change that has come over the sugar position (says the “New Zealand Herald”). M ith the announcement of a larger supply available, followed by the news that a fall in price was quite possible, the demand instantly contracted, and merchants have had the pleasant experience of being ah'-e to supply orders in full, for the first time for about twelve months. In fact, some orders have actually keen reduced and cancelled during the last few days, so that the position is evidently well in hand, to the great relief of wholesale and retail distributors.

The funeral of the late Mr James bigg of Kumara, took place yesterday afternoon to Hokitika cemetery. A number of Kumara residents wore included in the cortege. The Rev A. C. Purchas conducted the service at the graveside.

There was a large attendance at St Mary’s Club Rooms on Monday evening when ti c usual euchre tournament and dance took place. U a meeting of the Committee of the West Coast Rugby Union last evening it was resolved that Blaketown fourth grade he permitted to visit Hokitika on September 29. A circular was received from tlie Buller Union in reference to age limit in the Newman Shield Competition. It was resolved that no action he taken until a conference meets next season as the rules for this season have already been drawn up. The following fixture was drawn up for next Saturday :—W est Coast Secondary School Rep Team v. Team from Orcv District. It was decided to wire Hokitika to endeavour to arrange match next Saturday: Hokitika junior reps. v. Grey junior reps. A monster whale, between 70 and 80 feet in length, was discovered by a Maori, J. Httitt, on the Wood end Beach on Sunday morning, about half a mile north of the end of the road. It was known to have been in the vicinity for some days, and was washed up hv the high tide on Saturday night, it bore several harpoon marks, and lmd evidently been dead some Lime. Already a large quantity of whalebone, weighing 3cwt, lias been removed from the mouth, anil there is about the same nntminf. left, and the boiling down operations have commenced.
