THE SEDDON SHIELD. WON BY GOLDEX BAY. GREYAIOUTH, Sop. 17. The match for the Seddon Shield at Grevmouth on Saturday between AVest Coast- and Golden Bay, resulted in a win for Golden Bay by 3 points (a try) to nil. The ground was a sheet of water, a heavy nor-wester blowing. In the first spell, when C'cast had the wind with them, the ' game was fairly even, but the Gulden Bay team more than held their own almost throughout the second half, and in the final stages were continuously on ths attack score coming seven minutes before time was called. They first tried passing, but when the Coast forwards had plenty of wind and got quickly to their hades, passing looked an unwise policy. Rapps, the Bay captain, who at five-eighths, played the outstanding hack game of the day, soon perceived judicious cross-kicking was the correct thing, anil tried it several times, though it was not till the finish that it luckily came oil' so well as to land him a try. Coast pack didn't work in a hand) like the visitors, who, led bv Bowers. Richards and (till lie went off) Fcary. came through with rushes lepcatedly us the game advanced. Pay backs often mulled passing, however, hut Coast hacks s ddom even attempted il. Palmer (Coast half) had little chance, as his pack let the opposition down on him simultaneously with the hall, when they did heel it, and time alter time Palmer’s kick was blocked. Goodall had a lot to do. and mostly did it as well as usual, not letting his sidedown. McKay was more useful in defence than attack, while the reverse hold good of Aloynihan. AA’nrnes’s chief utility was some helpful longkicking. hut he played a fair game all round. Nelson and Reynolds were below form. Of the Coast pack. Bannister and Burley were good in the tight play, and Jamieson and Alonatt were most noticeable in the loose. The hookers were better in the loose than in the tight, while AY right and Hager did not come as much as usual into the picture. Bowers was the best forward on the ground, while Richards, Peary and Austin also were very solid in the visitors’ even, persistent pack. Rapps was the best hack, and Al. Ilnlyoake at full-hack was better on the day than even Goodall. Falconer and Thompson (half) were also prumiueut visiting backs.
