NEWCASTLE COAL.

WELLINGTON, Sept. 10 The general secretary of the New Zealand Seamen’s Union, AD AY. T. Young, to-day discussed the subject c? the importation of Australian coal into New Zealand in vessels, the crews of which are receiving only the British rate of pay. ATr A’oung stated that the steamer Piako, about which a protest has been made by the Alliance of Labour, was not the first such vessel to bring Newcastle coal to New Zealand in such circumstances as has occurred, nor would she be tho last. Air Young said he had information that the steamer Tredenham has left Newcastle with coal for New Zealand, and that she was 10 firemen short, her sailors being required to assist in maintaining steam. lie had also received information that endeavours would he made to send over some thousands of tons of coal to New Zealand in vessels similar to the Piako and the Tredenham.
