CANTERBURY PROGRESS LEAGUE.

CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. G. I The executive of tho Canterbury Progress 'League met last evening, i The President (Mr IV. K. AJcAlpine) said that since last meeting the opening of the Arthur’s Pass tunnel hud taken place. It had been a successful, function, and those present included many members of the executive, 'though invitations had to be limited in accordance with the Department's wishes. The delays i that, had taken place in the tunnel on opening day were delays that could he expected in all installations of that kind. Fortunately arrangements had been made so that the banquet, in the evening was not interfered with. Mr Board said that many WestCoast people had hoen disappointed bccause or the limit oil invitations, but. after tile function, satisfaction was expressed with the arrangements made. It was recognised that the Department had done tho right tiling. The treasurer (Mr Tvers) reported that the cash balance in Xo 1 account on August 31. was £lßl. Reporting on the (banquet, Air Climie said it proved highly successful and enjoyable. There were 25-1 diners.

The treasurer reported that in the banquet account, as far as the league's finances were concerned, payments and receipts were equal, though there had hoen a deficiency of £llO. That deficiency had been paid by the treasurer acting on behalf of those who wished to bo responsible for it.

The president paid a tribute to the services of the organiser and the treasurer, who had done a great deal of work and carried through the function successfully.

Messrs T’vevs and Climie were accorded a hearty vote of thanks.

The resignation of Mr H. J. Marriner as a member of the executive was accepted with regret, and lie was thanked for past services. Mr W. Striiigleman wrote suggesting that something special should lie done to attract West Coast visitors to Christchurch during carnival week in November. One method might bo reduced excursion fares. On one or two days’, the Christchurch train could be started from Hokitika. The letter was referred to the railway committee. The Westland committee of tho league wrote asking for the executive’s support of the agitation for the completion of the Glenhope-Bleiiheim railway via Top House. The letter was received. It was agreed to receive a deputation from the Marlborough Progress League and a deputation from Kaikoitra to discuss railway matters at next meeting.
