GERMAN GOODS EMBARGO. WELLINGTON, Sept. 4. The embargo on the importation of German, Austrian and Hungarian goods is now removed as from Saturday last and trade with those countries may now he resumed subject to the tariff. The effect of the new regulations is that German goods specified in the first schedule of the “Gazette” notice will he subject to a special depreciated currency duty of 33 1-3 |K*r cent in addition to the rates set out under the tariff. Articles coming into New Zealand are divided into two classes: (1) Goods unlikely to prejudicially or injuriously affect industries in the Dominion, and in other parts of the British Dominions, and (2) those which are likely to affect such industries. N.Z. GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP. NELSON. September 16. The Now Zealand Ladies Golf Championship opened this afternoon under perfect weather conditions when the inter-island match is being , played. Over sixty entries have been received lor the various events, including thir-ty-three for the championship which commences to-nmrrow. APPOINTMENT OF REFEREES. AUCKLAND, Sept. 6. T’he question of tin* appointment -of referees for inter-provincial football matches was di-cussed by the Auckland 'Rugby Union last evening. The New Zealand Union notified the local union that C. Atkinson, of Wanganui, had been appointed referee for the Auokland-N.fi.\V. match to he played on Mt. Eden Park on Saturday and it was resolved to protest against the system of appointing referees from outside provinces for local matches, as there are a number of local referees available. EARTHQUAKE SHOCK. CHRISTCHURCH, Sepl, h. A slight earthquake shuck was felt in the city ami Lyttelton, being recorded at 9.4 a.m. The Magnetic Observatory reports it was purely a local quake, small in origin, probably fentrod in North Canterbury.
HOUSE DESTROYED. AUCKLAND, Sept. 0. A tire at Takapuna last night completely destroyed . a . five-roomed house owned by C. V. Platts, of the Valuation Department and occupied by K. Galiagan. The latter, with his family, left the place locked while visiting. Later neighbours discovered the place well ablaze, the contents including a pianola worth L'2so, being destroyed. The House was insured in the State Office for I'llHlll and the contents for £4OO in the Royal Exchange Assurance Office.
LANDS COMMISSIONER DEAD. AUCKLAND, Sepl. (I.
Air It . P. Greville, Commissioner of Crown Lands for North Auckland, died this morning, his age being til. When about to leave Auckland for a holiday lie became ill with a serious internal complaint and he was removed to a private hospital a week ago for an operation. which showed that his case was hopeless.
BOGUS DOCTOR SENTENCED. AUCKLAND, September 5. At the Police Court a sentence of one month’s imprisonment was imposed <>n Frederick Walton MeClcnmm, aged twenty, who posed as a bogus dortoi, at To Kawhata and for a broach of liis probation on a previous sentence for obtaining ten guineas by false pretences, Magistrate poyuton said the next time prisoner would get. six months. IMF. NEW .MIX!K. S' iI.ICITOR-t lENERAI, APPOINTED. WELLINGTON. Sept. 0. Mr W. C'. MacGregor. Solicitor-Gen-eral. has been appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court, AM INQUEST. DUNEDIN. Sept. fi. Ail inquest was held on the body of Gladys May McKenzie who died at Ashburton Hall (Mental Institution) ft Dunedin, after being sent by motor from Geraldine. A verdict was returned that deceased died of acute bronchitis.
The Coroner expressed the opinion that, a girl in that condition should not have been allowed to leave Geraldine without being carefully examined hy the doctor in charge of the case at the Geraldine Hospital.
A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. AUC KLAND, Sept. (L A girl fell down a lift at Knden’s Buildings last evening and was hospitalled and identified as Myra Sylvia Penno, aged 17, who was employed in a iain factory. She left home at 2 p.m. yesterday. There was nothing unusual ill hot - appearance and no indication of how the accident occurred. Her condition is critical.
