AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CAULK ASSOCIATION. JOHNSTON A'. HAAYKES. N KAY YORK, Sept, 3. The weather is glorious and warm, there being a large attendance owing to the holiday. Hnwkes proved to be no match for Johnston. The latter repeatedly broke through his service, smashed with deadly accuracy and scored repeatedly at the net. In the first set the Australian could not win a game. In the- second lie took the first game on His own service. Johnston made four straight errors hut quickly evened up. On his services Hnwkes lust the third game by missing two easy chances at the net. He battled gamely but could not cope with his opponent’s terrific speed, hut by clever change of pace he managed to win the fifth game. He then became erratic and the American won 6—2.
ANDERSON FNAY ELL. NEAY YORK. Sept. 3. Anderson has declared that, acting under medical advice, lie. would withdraw his entry for the National Singles.
