At St. Mary’s Club rooms on Monday evening there was another huge attendance at tho euchre tournament. The first ladies’ prize was won by Mrs A. Sumner and the second by Miss Maher. The first gentleman’s prize was won bv Mr Itobertson, and the second by Mr J. Lynch. The winners of tho lucky table wore Mrs T. Gillooly. Mrs H. Fitzgerald, Mr A\. Ziegler and Master Oomlfollow. The music for the dance was supplied by Mrs F. Saxon, and extras by Miss C. Fox. Mr K. Kearns had charge of the floor.
While in South Westland, the attention of Mr Duff, ( utility Chairman. was drawn to the fact that the Forest Service authorities had. prohibited sleeper culling in the Oknrito district, with the result', that those «-ho had pursued this useful occupation over a long period, were nowthrown out of employment. The County Chairman at the request of tec men affected, promised to make enquiry in regard to the prohibition, with a view, if possible, cf having the local industry restored for the benefit of local employment.

We regret to record the death of Mr Edward Mulviliill, the well-known hotelkeeper of Kumarn, which took place at Westland Hospital at an early hour this morning. Deceased had been in ill-health for some time and was brought to Westland Hospital a fortnight ago in a serious condition, and passed away as stated. He was a native of Hokitika and f>2 years of age. Out has been identified with Kuniara, since the rush. He look a prominent part in local public affairs, and had 1 •pen a member of the Ktiniarn Borough Council, the ofd Kumarn Hospital Hoard, the Racing Club and Fire Brigade. A popular citizen, his death will he generally deplored. He was a single man, but leaves a mother and sister to mourn his loss and to them general sympathy will lie extended.
Inspector Mathieson, ol the (* rot - mouth Police District, in his annual report stated:—No new stations have been opened during the tear, neither have any been closed. Iwo constables died during the year from natural causes. During the year, 1.347 offences were reported, ol which 1,311 were dealt with by arrest or summons, leaving a little over 2 per cent unaccounted for, which I submit is fairly satisfactory. Compared with the previous year, however, there is an increase of 1 •*> 1 offences: these are principally due io prosecution under the Licensing Act. Ihe conduct of the men as a whole has been good, only one constable being punished for offences against the regulations in this district. A second constable was punished here for an offence which took place in another district prior to his transfer. The population of the <listriet shows a steady increase, amt when the Otira Tunnel is opened (which will he soon) it is expected there will be a large influx of people to the Coast.” The annual report shows there are 12 members of the force in the district,, Iff being at Greymotit h.

A meeting of local drapers will bo held at the County Chambers at 3.30 o’clock to-morrow afternoon to deal with matters affecting betiding supplies for the Exhibition.

A special meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held this morning at 11.45 o’clock. Present: Messrs Perry (Mayor), Wood, Lloyd, Heinz, Mackay and King. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Coulson, Jeffries and Pelham. The formal motions were passed striking the annual rates of which public notice had been given. The meeting then terminated.
“They called out to see whether I had any castor oil.” announced a witness in the Supreme Court at Wellington, who remembered the date from this apparently insignificant fact. The court waited. “Yes, the little hoy had swallowed a. threepenny bit,” she added amidst laughter. “From the Cnristmas pudding!'” suggested counsel on the opposite side. “Yes,” brightly replied the witness “that's right.” Even t-hc judge joined in the laughter that followed.
