THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
Thk Cost of 1911. “Of the troops that fought in front of Mlieluvelt in the first battle of Ypres, the Ist. battalion of the Queen’s had but 50 men left after October .'list, hut; the Ist. Loyal North Lancers 35 men and one officer; in ten days up to October 31st. the Cameron Highlanders lost 38 officers and over 1000 other ranks. Instances could be multiplied, for all battalions were in like case. We had no resolves, and if we bad fallen back a few miles tho Channel ports would have been lost. I had some 30 medium heavy guns with my corps <*t that time to withstand the punishment (as w e know) of 260 German heavy guns. W r o had practically '%'h explosives and a great shortage of artillery ammunition generally.”—General Ilaig.
