A notification respecting the proposed alteration of boundaries of the Borough of Hokitika, appears in this issue. The area affects the part ot the borough on tho south side of the river. All objections must bo lodged within one month of August 25th.

At a meeting of the Centre ot the West Coast Golf Association at Westport, there being present Messrs A. A. Wilson (chair), and Lovell (Westport), Chesney and Pratt (Hokitika), Shallcrass and Kettle (Greymouth) and Mr Harkncss, secretary, it was decided to hold tho next championships at Greymouth in 1924, and to have a uniform system of alloting handicaps. Mr L. J. Schmitt of the Department of Industries, Christchurch, is expected to visit Hokitika on Tuesday of next week. While in town he will enquire into the available accommodation. and also confer with the Exhibition Council in respect to various matters on which he will advise. All Schmitt took a foremost interest in matters of detail affecting the welfare of the Exhibition held a few months ago at Christchurch.

At tho Magistrate's Court, Greymouth, yesterday, before Mr Moldrum, SAT,, (Raymond Poschicn, licensee of the Ferry Hotel, Rapahoe, was fined £2 and costs on a charge ol selling liquor about midday on Sunday, August 20th. Thomas Klintoff, a fireman on the Kaituna on a charge of causing wilful damage, while, drunk, to a motor car to the extent ol ’-10. pleaded guilty and was convicted and ordered to pay the cost ol the damage within two months.

At the Magistrate’s Court, Groymuuth, yesterday, two charges, one of selling milk deficient in milk fat and the other of selling milk which showed 12..J7 per cent of added water, were preferred against Arthur Wilfred Russ. Defendant, for whom Mr \\ - ,1. Joyce appeared, pleaded not guilty. Godfrey Henry Russell, inspector of Health, said that the sample of mill; taken from defendant showed 1.3 pc. cent, milk fat, 7.91 per cent solids other than milk fat, and 12.7 per <cut water. The mill; was taken from defendant’s cart, and he was oil liis ordinary rouiid. The Magistrate convicted the defendant, and lined Inin L 5, with cost-s. He said that defendant should exercise every care in the direction of ensuring the qualify of the milk to be sold.

At Reefton Hospital on Saturday the death took place of the oldest identity of the district, Mr John .Shannon, who had been identified with the mining life of the Tnaiigaliua district since the very earliest days. ’Hie deceased, who was horn at Bellast, Ireland, in 1836. and was therefore in his SSth year, arrived in Melbourne a young man in 1857. and spent some years on the Victorian and New South Wales goldfields. Oil the breaking out of Gabriel’s Gully rush the late .Mr Shannon at once came to New Zealand and after spending somw time at Gabriel’s Gully, was successively at Weathorstones. Wailahnna, and Hartley and Riley (Molynenux) rushes, ami later at Wakatipu, Sliotovcr and Arrow River, working claims at all these places. Wakamarina followed, and after a short- time there lie left for Hokitika, arriving in 1860. Claims at Knnieri, Wnimoa and Ross (listriots were also worked by Mr Shannon, who then removed to Grey Valley, setting in at Noble’s and Half-Ounce, and went to Tnangahua in 1868, and worked alluvial claims at Redman’s. He had since then resided in Reefton district.
