AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CAIILK ASSOCIATION. A FATHER’S CRIME. MELBOURNE, Sep 1. Robert Medlieott was remanded on a charge of murdering his eleven year old daughter at Richmond. The evidence disclosed the accused s childien were quarrelling at the tea-table, mid a knife was thrown, which penetrated the girl’s chest. She died shortly after. When questioned hv the police, the accused said he did not know t\li\ he threw the knife, hut he might have.
QUEENSLAND STRIKE. ’Received this day at 8 a.m.) BRISBANE. Sept. 3. Two hundred State seamen have struck, demanding Federal rates and hours which would mean C2 <s lOd more than they now receive and one hour per day less. The Vrvmwr refused the demands. THE COLLIERY DISASTER. SYDNEY. Sep. 3. Australia was painfully shocked at the news of the colliery disaster, though relief was felt that the morning shift escaped. The chief papers despatched reporting slabs to the scene by motor. Graphic accounts of harrowing spectacles are published, and valiant efforts of the reselling parties, particularly Brown (manager of the Aherdare mine) are recorded. A new danger was encountered by men scaling the mine, for as fast as the men filled in the cavities to seal the outbds the gas inside caused a rumbling in the effort to escape, followed by a loud explosion. Notwithstanding a number of such explosions, the rescuing parties stuck grimly to the task. A "number of thrilling episodes were witnessed.
