ASHBURTON, Aug. 31 In the Ashburton County, which possesses nine of the Dominion’s total of 59 road hoards, the {.minty Council is doing no road work. At a conlerenee of the Boards and the Council to-day, it was resolved to take a referendum of the ratepayers on the question ol abolishing some of the hoards. The meeting favoured making the County a complete district under tho Highway Hoard. Its valuation is eleven millions which justifies that.

WELLINGTON, Sept. 1 When Dr Edith Iluntly (Veil in 1919, she bequeathed a sum, which has now increased t> £8,500, in trust for tho maintenance and endowment of an institution for the care and treatment of expectant mothers. By arrange'ment w'th the trustees this sum ha:|j now been handed over to the AVellington Ladies' Christum Association for the purpose of erecting a bluntly wing to the Alexandra Home for Women.

At the Police Court, Samuel .Tames Howijons was charged with the theft of lounces of gold, valued at £7BO, the property of Samuel •!. Luke and others. The evidence til* a la rgc number cf witnesses was that the gold was of similar appearance and quality to gold obtained by the Caadrona dredge, Clutlia River, of which tie accused was drodgemaster for a year. This company went- into liquidation some years ago. when the returns fell elf. One witness was a gold officer of the Bank of Now Zealand who had assayed the Caidrona's gold. He stated that a sample submitted by the police assayed closer to the C’ardrona assay than any on the bank lecords. Evident e further showed that accused admitted selling gold, and had stated that he had it in his possession for eight years, but would not say where he obtained it.

Defence was reserved and accused was . committed for trial on bail of toll'd. DATIIY EXPORT CONTROL BILL. •WELLINGTON. August 31. Statements made by Mr Fear at Miisterton, relative to cool stores and the Manchester Co-operative Dairy Farmers Bank, previously telegraphed in u Cress Association message were referred to by Mr M . Grounds (C hairman of the Dairy Council) who says lie deeply appreciates the knowledge that tho Dairy Council are to have the hearty co-operation of the New .eahuid Farmers Union and the Dairy Farmers’ Union in furthering the Dairy Export Control Bill. He feels that MiFear’s intentions are along the same lilies. He would point out, however, that tho suggestions made by Mr Fear are not part of the proposal in any sense of the word, and have never been thought of by the Dairy Council and the promoters of the Bill.
