MINISTRY ALL RETURNED
LONDON. August- 29
Eight of the Irish Free State Ministers have been returned, including President Cosgrave, Mr Walsh, Mr Duggin, and Mr McGrath, -and it is believed that the other three Ministers are safe.
President Cosgrave stood in Kilkenny. He received 17,711 votes out of the -10,190 polled or three times tho quota. Mr Mideally, in North Dublin, received 22.234 first preferences. out of 5(3.332, the quota being (3147. Mr Duggan has headed the poll in Meath with 8202 votes, his surplus ueing 2457. Mr Ait-ken (the Republican) was however. victorious in Louth with 0051 votes out ol 25,50(3 votes cast. The Government has lost two seats itt County Cavan, including that formerly held by the Lite Mr Arthur Griffiths The Labour Patty bas been relying on a turnover of surplus votes. LATER RETURNS. LONDON, August 30. The latest Irish election figures ate as follows: Government, thirty-four. Independents, eleven. Republicans, ton. Farmers’ Party, five. Labour Party, three. The enumeration of votes tinder the proportional representation 'system is proving a tedious, long-drawn-out process. The results arc being announced spasmodically, when it transpires chat one candidate or another has obtained the requisite quota by the allocation of the second preferences, but such announcements are not official. Mr Walsh, the Postmaster-General (leaded the poll in Cork City with double the necessary quota.
In North Cork. Mr Daniel Corkery, the outgoing member, who is a Republican. heads the poll, and in Tipperary a famous Republican, Dan O’Brien, is returned.
Tlie defeat of Mr Catlial O’.Shannon, a. Labour Leader,' is announced in Louth. This has caused a. surprise. Professor Michael Hayes, Speaker in the late Dail Eireann lias been elected for both Dublin South and the Irish National University. He sat for tho latter seat in the late Dail Eireann. He will not select which seat he will take and the other seat thereupon will become vacant necessitating .•diye-elec-tion.
The latest reports indicate that neither the Labour nor Farmers’ Parties have done is well as was expected. The Farmers’ Party in all may not exceed twenty whereas they anticipated forty seats. Their leaders attribute this to the insistence of the press on the necessity of voting for the Government to ensure its return and tbo Government has doubtless profited geuetallv bv this advice.
