[llY TELEGRAPH —I‘ER TRESS ASSOCIATION.] EX-SOLDIER CHARGED. WELLINGTON. August 20. At the Felice Couit. John Neill was committed for trial on a charge ol making false statements to an officer doing duty in relation to the War Pensions Act in mi important particular, to wit that he was unemployed when lie made a statement as a consequence of which lie received payment of supplementary pension. Accused was discharged from Pukcroa Sanatorium in 1920, and received a pension. By making false statements he received additional moneys at a time when lie was working for the Labour Department and receiving £236 per annum. Evidence was given to this effect by various officers of tlie Defence and Labour Departments. YOUTH BURNS A HOMESTEAD. NAPIER, August 20. Joint (iartslioro Robertson, aged 16, was charged at the Police Court this morning with arson by wilfully setting fire to tv homestead on the Smodlev Estate. Tikokitio, on March 26, when the building was completely destroyed. Accused pleaded guilty. He was committed for sentence. Robertson admitted to a detective that he set firo to the house out of spite, in consequence of differences with the- manager of tho estate.

EMPIRE TRADE. DUNEDIN. August- 20. A general meeting of the members - of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce to-night adopted the following resolution : —‘'That in view of Mr Massey's departure to the Imperial Conference, this C'hamTer is in full sympathy with the idea of trade within the Empire, and would welcome any preference which the Mother Country could see her wav to give to the exports of the Dominion. Out tho Chrunlior recognises that the question is one affecting aach portion of the Empire, and recommends tlie Prime Minister to confer with the representatives of tho other Dominions in order to see if some agreement can he come to. and a proposal as to Empire trade itjjftl be laid before the Imperial Council as representing tho views of the Empire outside Great Britain.”
