OBITUARY
SAMUEL 0. FERGUSON. AETAT 76 YEARS. Cable advice was received this morning from Mr Paul Renton, who is in Sydney, stating that Mr Samuel G. Ferguson had died suddenly from heart failure there last night. Mr Ronton was in Australia for the purpose of bringing Mr Ferguson hack to New Zealand and they were to leave by the Tahiti on August 23rd. Mr Ferguson had been in failing health for some time past.
Deceased was horn in I*IS in County Dorrv, Ireland, where he was educated and brought up on his father’s farm. In 187.3 lie came to New Zealand, joining his brothers on the Most Coast, in South Westland, later opening the well-known hostelry at Fergusons that he so successfully carried on for many years. He had l>eon a well-known figure at his favourably known accommodation. house* at Fertiuson’s. it liemtr a pxmnlnr place of call to all travellers going to and from South Westland. He lost his worthy helpmate in Sept, last year, and retired from the control of the hostelry at the beginning of this year, then taking a trip to Australia. He had come from (Queensland to Sydney when the final call came. Mr Ferguson took a prominent part in local politics, and served for many years on the Westland County Council, living Countv Chairman on two occasions, first in 100 ? . and again in 1913. lie retired front County politics at the elections some four years ago. Deceased leaves one (laughter 'Mrs Paul Renton of Hokitika) and an adopted son (Mr Geo. Ferguson of Fergusons). There are also a number of other relatives in the Hnribari district. Very general regret will he felt by a wide circle of friends.
