INTER-ISLAND GAME. SOUTH PROVE TOO GOOD. tI'SI'KALIAN AND N.Z. C.VL’LE ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, August H). For the inter-island men’s hockey match, the ground was perfect. Tho garlic* developed into one ol tno finest seen in Wellington. 'J he best tearn on the day’s play, was the South, and their win by five goals to two was popular. South set up an attack, and l alder netted tin olf-side goal. North relieved, but South quickly returned, and Bell shut over the net. Mainmining their pressure, South had a good opj uttunity to net, but Calder‘B shot jm-t missed. North now iook a hand in tin* attack. Mahofiey saving his side. Mortal wire not to be denied, and from a neat piece of forward play, Kiil netted. South then iook a liaild in the attack, arid Giblin scored. At half-time North led by two to one.
The second spell was in favour of tile South Island. Two corners were forced by South, in quick succession. 1). Ward shot from the light wing beating Moire. 2-2. Bell made a great run, and bad little difficulty in netting. South 3. Ninth 2. North made several breakaways, but all proved fruitless, p'rom a combined onslaught, Vi ells centred to Giblin, who put the ball in the net. -1-2. The filial score of the mail'll was obtained by Giblin.
In a curtain-raiser, Wellington <3e foaled Wanganui by 7 goals to nil.
N.Z. V. QUEENSLAND. BRISBANE, August lib The New Zealand hockey team played Queensland on the Exhibition (Hound before 15.000 spectators. New Zealand attacked immediately, I’hilpoits .scoring ten minutes after the start. Boyd short passed, and Philpott.s scored a second goal. ’I lie same piayer soon netted again and Loekey (of Buller) got ii fourth goal. The New Zealanders were playing with fine combination. -After half tune. Best netted for Queensland, and Matts scored a fifth goal for New Zealand vho tlius won 5 to 1.
