The untimely decease of several cats and dogs throughout tin* town, says the “Grey Star" has caused several ot the bereaved owners a great deal of consternation. At first it was thought that there was an epidemic in the animal world corresponding to the present influenza epidemic. buL more deadly. The population of New Zealand at the census of 17th. April, 1921. wa* 1.218.913. This total does not include Maoris, whose numbers were separately determined at 57.751. The mean population for 1922 (exclusive of Maoris) was estimated to he 1,251.895. This total represents an increase l over the corresponding figure for the previous year of 27,994, or a percentage increase of 2.29. The births of 29,H0C living children wore registered in the Dominion during 1922. as against 28.507 in 1921 and a yearly average ol 27.223 during the pre-war period 1910-14. The birth-rate for 1922 was thus 23.17 per 1,009 of mean population. The number of deaths record'd during 11)22 was 10,997. as compared with 10.682 in 1921 and a yearly average of 9,370 in the period 1910-11. The s.s. Oimmti, the largest steamer to enter the Grev river arrived there yesterday. The Omana was built m 1915, in Sunderland, by Messrs Osborne, Graham and Co., for the It. Lamb Proprietary Co., of Sydney. The vessel, which is a single screw one. lias a registered gross tonnage of 202 J tons, a dead-v.eight capacity of 4109 tons, and a registered net tonnage of I •MO tons. Her displacement is 5100 lons Tile ship’s dimensions are: length, Jiff feet, lie-nil 16.2 feet, and depth 20.2 feet. She is equipped with a wireless set. The vessel is capable of loading 2.000.000 superficial foot of timber, but silo will proceed to load in the vicinity of 1,300,000 superficial feet of timber here for Sydney, and this will constitute the largest cargo ever taken from the port in one sfiip. A former well-known Totara t lat resident, Mrs 11. Herbertson, died a few days ago at her residence in Auckland, 'at the age of 83 years. She had been 60 years in New Zealand, and lived at Totara Flat for 30 years, until 1803. She leaves a husband (Mr John Herbertson) and one son, Mr Titos. H. Latimer.
