FOOTBALL.

At- a meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union held at. Greymouth last evening, a deputation from the Citizens’ Committee in connection with the Redden Shield Retention Fund, comprising Messrs J. To mien t, R. Rothwell, ,J. W. Greenslade, and C. MeKechuie, waited on the billion. Mr Tomtom, stated they desired to ascertain whether the union would hand over to the committee the balance of last year’s Heddou Shield Fighting Fund, which was collected by the Citizens’ Committee.

Alter discussion, it was decided on the motion of Mr Perkins to hand over £lO9 to the committee, representing the balance on hand from this fund. A telegram was received from the N.Z-R.F. notifying tho appointment ot Mr W. 15. Fuller, of Canterbury as referoo for the fieddon Shield match, Buffer v. West Coast, oil Saturday. It was resolved that a West Coast primary schools’ representative team he sent to Christchurch to compete in the South Island inter-union schools’ competition among Southland, Otago, South Cmiterbmy, Canterbury, mid West Const. This competition has been in vogue for some time, hut the Most Coast has not previously been admitted. It was decided that a “curtain-raiser” to the West Coast-Bullor match to he put <m at- the Park on Saturday between ‘'Possible” and “Probable’’ teams of West Coast primary school boys with a view to the selection of the West Coast representative team for the inter-union schools' competition.

Tie Buller selectors have chosen the following players to go into training: Kearns, O’Brien, .1. Corby, Davis, Phihl's. Thornton, Griffiths, McKcndry. Pidweli, Tunnicliffe, Watson. Gardiner, (loodall (21, Mcl.ean (2), Schadiek. G. Stuart. Mr A. Colvin was appointed manager of the team to visit, Grevmouth and Mr T. King was appointed coach.

RUGBY ENQUIRY

WANGANUI, August 13

The Wanganui Rugby Union this evening conducted an inquiry into the failure of four Native players—members of the Rata Club in the Rangitikei Sub-union, to make the trip with the Wanganui touring team. After a lengthy hearing, during which the Rangitikci officials admitted iniornung a Wanganui delegation erroneously that the oub-Cnion's meeting had been held, •nd rescinded -a certain motion, the Rugby Union resolved as follows: (li That the suspension of tile Rnngitikei Sub-union he lifted, as from 14th. at y, noon, its misdemeanours having been covered by an open and frank admission of ignoiance of the rules; (2) That the four players be censured, and their suspension 1;0 lifted as from August 14 at. 12 noon; (3) that Messrs L. Hammond. C. Gibbons and Whitcomb, Rangitikei Sub-union officials be suspended till the end of the senson.
