On Saturday last Mrs Seddon and Miss Kettle met at Omoto in tho final of the Grey Ladies’ Golf Championship. After an interesting contest Mrs Seddon won by five up and three to play.

A short amendment of the Amusement Tax Act was introduced l\v Governor-General’s message in tho House, tho main purpose being contained in one clause. It substitutes for the word ‘-ninepence” in the principal Act the words “one shilling,’’ and the effect is as follows; — '•Where tho price charged for admission does not exceed one shilling no amusement tax shall he charged. A further amendment slightly alters the phraseology of ihe principal Act so as to remove any doubt regarding the exemption of swimming sports from amusement tax. As there is no further change race meetings or any meetings promoted for tho purpose of any game of sport will continue to bear taxation.
A lire totally destroyed a stable and contents, as well as a shod nearby, the property of Mr T. E. Coates, in Alexander St.. Greymouth at 11.40 o’clock last night. The damage is estimated at £129. Mr Coates first discovered the fire, liis attention being attracted by the glare, and he immediately rang up the Fire Station. The alarm was given by him at 11.10 p.m.. and the Brigade arrived at 11.48. Ily then however, the structure was hopelessly ablaze. Some delay occurred before ihe water was turned on from a single lead of Imse. and meantime the blaze ignited some trees behind the stable and shed, the result being that the latter caught fire. As soon as the water was available, the fire was put out, the shed being only partly burned. The’ Building contained about ÜbO worth of tools and a quantity of hav. ,;|| of which was destroyed. Tho building and its contents which were not covered by insurance were a total loss. It is unknown how the fire originated.
