MR JARMAN’S REPORT R.E ABATTOIR.

(To the Editor). Sir.—l was quite surprised on reading your paper of Saturday, at the report Mr Jannan put in to the Hokitika Borough Council iC 'Abattoir. The first part of liis report I must contradict in which lie says the cow broke down the fence around Mr Connor's garden. The fence in question, was only constructed of a few wires, which have been loose for many months, ami never had rails around ii. as has me main fence, and cattle could easily walk through it. Then he goes on to say lie was compelled to employ two men to repair the fence, b.v putting on two rails and tightening tile wires all around the section, which goes to show that the fence was in had repair. Why was this not attended to before, as everyone who has occasion to handle cattle at the Abattoir knows well that this said fence was not lit to hold cattle. Re cows with calves, he says that the cows must he removed, as soon as the calves arc killed. Mr Jarmau ought to know that taking a cw awav as soon as the call is slaughtered, no matter how far you take her, she will he hack at the Abattoir within a very few hours, as has happened on many previous occasions, yet lie hills me for 17s rent of paddock for the said cow which has never been done before; also £1 los for rent of cattle left for .slaughtering. That is £2 12s for the month for paddocking alone. 1 would like Mr Jannan to furnish a report of what lias been paid in paddockillg by all the butchers etc, since tlie opening of the Abattoir. 1 think, sir. that the said laud must lie well paid for now. Be drafting cattle at the Abattoir, he says great inconvenience and unnecessary extra labour is caused to tile slaughterman, lias Mr Jarman only woke up to the fact about the mi necessary extra labour that Mr (.'minors lias been doing? All the hoteliers know well that Mr Connors is a busy man and I am quite sure that they are all as lenient to him as possible. In conclusion. 1 think the members of the Council should have heard both sieds of the question before coining to their decision. Thanking you for space in your most valuable paper.—A ours etc.. ,[. LOCK. Kanieri.
