It shows to the scientist the way in which gravity varies from point to point, at or near the earth's surface. The instrument has heen so arranged that it eiin easily he taken from plane to plane, set np on the ground without any shelter exi not that of a small tent. A mass of heavy ore. even if huried in the ground, alfeets the pull of gravity in. the instrument- if this is planed near it. and alleets two tilnmh hohs differently. One of these is at a lower level than the other. Tile two are connected and the system is hung up hv a long, line metal wire. The whole arrangement forms what is known as a torsion halanre. The twist in the wire measures the irregularilv in the action of gravity caused hv the ore 1.-t-d, hv a neighbouring hill, it cave henna ill the surface, ami so forth. I!y a careful study of the readings ol the instrument it is possible to til id flic best position for sinking a mine shaft to tail the orebed.
