THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

Thk Wau Anniversary. This anniversary is an opportunity for a calm review of all that has followed. Hundreds of thousands have died "that the world might crow old in peace,” hut there are the unfinished tasks. It must lie made a world worthy of such a sacrifice. That demands the continued service of all. 1 here is a dutv to serve the State and the Empire, and, in a wider sphere, to assist those movements which tend towards the establishment of a better order. We must see to it that those who suffered in the struggle are not left to suffer in these after-days; that those who lost so much that was dear to them that many of them "go to meet Death as a friend,” do not want in these times of stress and stringency. We must teach the rising generations to value a lie:it-age bought at such a price, and strive to hand it on intact to those who shall come after The anniversary should make its appeal to all who have lived through the most stirring days in the history of the world, so that the greatness that was proved in war shall not degenerate in davs of peace; and that the spirit cf service which glorified the Empire’s sufferings may still animate its endeavours as it faces the unfinished tasks. —Lyttelton Times.
