A meeting of the Kokatahi-Koite-rangi Band will be held in the Public Hall Kokatahi on Wednesday evening next at 8 o’clock. In view of the coming celebrations it is hoped to revive the Band so ns to take part in tho celebrations at the end of the year similar to the .successful band formed for the jubilee proceedings.

The monthly meeting of the- Westland Chamber of Commerce takes place to-morrow evening at 7.30 o’clock in the County Chambers. The question of a continuous telephone service for the town will 1.-e considered, also the matter of continuing the motor mail arrangements from Otiru while the present unsatisfactory train arrangements are maintained. A full attendance of all members is invited.

I .last Thursday, Mr T. W. Dull'. County Chairman telegraphed to the lion. Minister of Public Works, congratulating the Government on the completion of the Waitangi river bridge the last of the larger crossings on the road to Wailio Gorge to be bridged. Hon. J. G. Coates replied, August 3: “Very pleased to iccc.ivc your telegram with respect to Waitangi bridge. Very gratifying to learn its completion lias given general satisfaction. Regards.”

Mr P. R. Climie, the able organiser of the Canterbury Progress League, was iyit able to attend the tunnel celebrations at Otira., having given up his train scat to a Canterbury representative. Mr Climie. however, was not forgotten, and on behalf of the Westland Branch of the Canterbury League, it telegram was despatched to him at Christchurch, regretting 1 1 is absence from the finale. Mr Climie lias been a. very ardent worker in the task of hastening the completion of the tunnel works and the ultimate opening.

Very general dissatisfaction is being expressed here with regard to the railway time-table which came into operation to-day. On Saturday at Otira. at. a meeting of local body representatives from Westland, a telegram was drafted and sent to the Minister of Railways asking that- the District Traffic Manager be deputed to visit Hokitika this week and discuss with the local body representatives suggested alterations to meet the requirements o! the district, embracing both Hokitika and Boss. The matter is to be brought forward specially, also, at the Chamber of Commerce meeting to-morrow.

Tli-i Druids’ Ball which was to have taken place on July 25th. but was postponed owing to the inilucilza epidemic. is now set down to bo held in the Soldier's Hall on Wednesday. August Bth. According to the sale of tickets and the interest being evinced the gathering should prove the usual great success. Music, with the latest jazz effects, and Bells, by the Royal Orchestra, and the entertainment and comfort, of patrons will be well provided for.—Advt.

A quiet, but protiv wedding took place at Holy Trinity Church on Friday lasi, between Nellie, daughter of Sergeant and Mr-- Ravioli < f Preston (Lancashire), and Herbert, son of Mr H, Dandy, of Hamilton. Auckland. 1 ite of Preston. The bride wire a. tailored costume of lawn gabardine, trimmed with fur and braid, and nigger brown hat. trimmed with spring flowers. Mi-s V. Cox acted as bridesmaid and the bridegroom supported by Mi Charles Biu-liati, Archdeacon Carr officiated. The newly married couple subsequently left for Hokitika.

The coaches made their final trip with passengers and mails over Hie Otira Gorge on Friday, but under a special arrangement with the Government several coaches will be kept ill band as a standby in case ot any emergency. The mail contract, which has licen jointly held by the firms of Gassidy and Co., Ltd., and A. Hall, expired on Friday, and in the notice ct expiry received by Mr W. Campbell, the business representative of the i"inpanies in Christchurch, the Chief Postmaster states that the matter of Hie services rendered by the companies during the long time in which they have held the contract is being brought under the notice ot the bead office. Looking back over the years during which the coaches were the only means ot laud transport between Canterbury and Westland it is remarkable that only one passenger, a child, should have been killed as a result of the accident. That was many years ago, when a coach capsized on the moraine and the child was killed through falling under the vehicle .Mr Campbell lias been connected with Cassidy and Co. for thirty years, the first thirteen of which he was a driver. 11l those days the train ran to Springfield only, and the remainder of the journey to Hokitika was made by coach, the passengers staying overnight- at Benley. Changes of horses were made at Springs, Craigieburn, Healey, Otira. Taipo and Kuinara. The coaches did not make the journey to Greymouth, but. connected with a horse tramway from Kuinara to Greymouth. For one period of thirteen weeks it was impossible, owing to exceptionally heavy snow, to get the coaches through from Porter’s Pass to Otira, and mails had to he packed on horses.

Stenhouse, a Public Works carpenter, has been working at Otira for sixteen years.

A Wellington correspondent states there is a keen struggle going on just now in the potato trade between holders and buyers who have oversold, and it appears to some in close touch with the trade that the farmer will have the better of the struggle between the holders and over-sellers. Prices for Red Dnkotos at South Island ports of shipment are CO to £S 17s Gd a ton today. This shows a full of 7s Gd to 10s pei ton on the week. Farmers are sitting tight on their sacks while the struggle is going on, and some are reported to liavo said they will not open up their store pits under CIO a ton. However, farmers are not expected to he able to keep up the price for very long, tor the season ends in October.
