At the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon there was a wordy clash lietween Mr Murdoch and Mr McGavoek. The latter had been suggesting to a witness that the witness had lieon instrnmentnl in raising an agitation against the resumption of the area in question, but this the witness strenuously denied. The annexe at tl'.e Soldieis’ Hall was crowded last night for the euchre imirnament in aid of the lt-S.A. building fund. Fcr the ladies prize, Miss McGee, Mosdame.s Keller, Harker, Benjamin, Lynn and Morgan tied, and in the piny off the last named won the prize, tt decanter and glasses. Mr B. Jamieson (who won the full complement of games) won tho gent’s prize a shaving outfit. The lady's consolation prize was won by Mrs I.akin, after a tie with Mr» Brookes, and Mr H. Ivortegast won the gent’s, after a tie with Mr B. Adamson. After supper, an assembly was held, Miss \ . King supplying the music, the evening passing off very enjoyable. Mr Thomas Powick. an old and highly esteemed resident of Westport, possed away on Tuesday morning. Deceased was a native of Shrawlcy, A\ oreestershire, England, and 83 years ol age.
