The Waitangi bridge is being completed to-day and will be open for traffic during the week end. This will be good news to travellers who have been held up on many occasions when endeavouring to cross this river. The opening of the bridge will prove a great blessing to all travellers south.

Attention is directed to an advertisement in another column in which the New Zealand Government State Fire Insurance Department states that the State Board has decided to allow a bonus rebate of 15 per cent, in respect of premiums.

The Railway Department will not take over the tunnel train service from the Public Works Department next week. The usual Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday service will lie run through the tunnel until further notice. A regular goods service lias not yet been arranged.

On Friday, 3rd. August, there will in* an Overland service between Greymouth and Christchurch on the times of the usual service. On Saturday, 4th. Ring. in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon, and remanded to appear at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. All the money was recovered.

July was a month of excellent weather for this localiiy. The sunshine record was aliout Hit? hours for the month, and the rainfall far below the average, being onlv two inches and nhalf. more than half of which fell on one day. Indeed the rainfall for the seven mouths just ended is much below the average, being under fifty inches. Tho Grcymouth Drapers’ Association and Retail Trades Association have decided not to close their shops on Saturday in connection with the Otirn Tunnel holiday, but they intend closing on Monday.

The death took place at Cape Foulwind on Monday of Mr John Hilton, a native of Lancashire, who came to New Zealand some eleven years ago. He was a married man, 52 years of age and leaves a widow and family of three daughters, to whom sympathy is extended in their bereavement.

Tho death occurred on Saturday of Richard Ball, one of Blenheim’s oldest residents, in his COth year. He was a native of Cornwall, England. Ball served as a young man in the Royal Navy. Ip iho early twenties, he joined the Army and look part in the Crimean War. lie was ordered to New Zealand to take part in the Maori War,

and at the- conclusion of hostilities, lie remained in New Zealand, settling in Nelson forty years ago. 110 opened n business as taxidermist in Blenheim. There are six children surviving, thirty grandchildren and thirty-five great grandchildren.

At a meeting of the Committee of the West Coast Rugby Union held last evening, it was resolved that Saturday next be a gala day, and that the proceeds be diverted to the Old Peoples’ Home Fund. A seven-aside tourney for teams in four classes (senior, junior, 3rd grade and 4tli. grade) was arranged for. It was resolved that the charges for the Canterbury-West Coast match next Wednesday bo 2s and Is. Members of the Coast team to play Canterbury are to assemble in Greymouth on Monday evening, the invitation of the Hokitika Sub-union to he present at the welcome to tho West Coast- team in Hokitika this evening was accepted with thanks, and the President and several members of the Union, together with as many members of the Greymouth team as are available will leave Greymouth by motor at 5.45 li.in. to-day.

To-night’s reception to the West Coast football team at the Town Hall should add great impetus to the players of the district judging by the great number of people who have signified tlieir intention of being present. The Sod don Shield will be on exhibition in Hokitika, for the first time and one and all are welcome to come and inspect the valued trophy. r lho Shield is a most handsome piece of work and a beautifully finished article which any district might well be proud to defend.
