In the opening match of the Davis Cup series at Montreal. Shmidzu (Japan) defeated Crocker ((’amnia) in a st iihbornly-fotight battle by 6—6, !!—i, il—.], S --li. Shmidzu played soundly and consistently, and wore down his younger opponent by ell'ectivo volleying as a counter-poise to Crocker’s smashing M-rvii e. In the second match Fukuda (Japan defeated Rennie (Canada) by 6—2, 6-1, 6—o. Fukuda was not perplexed by Rennie's strokes and relumed uniformly fast drives, with which the Canadian was unable lo cope. Tomorrow the doubles will lu- played. Shmidzu and Kashin meeting Millie and Wright.
