Dr. Ranting admits there are certain types of diabetes for which insulin in its present state is useless. Also others where it is actually harmful. There is a long way to travel. We have still to discover, for instance, the cause of diabetes. Many doctors seemed eager to know whether it had been found practicable for patients to administer insulin themselves. He did not see any reason why there should not he related the ease of an American commercial traveller who carried his own insulin, and made injections morning and night, with as little inconvenience as shaving.

TREATMENT AT DUNEDTN

DUNEDIN. July 27

The Hospital Board's medical superintendent wrote that a commencement had been made at the hospital of the insulin treatment for diabetes. Doctor Dreiiimn. of the Pa theological l.abortory, had charge of the distribution on behalf of the Central Department. It was understood that within two or three* months sufficient insulin would be available for all eases, and that the three other base hospitals in New Zealand would also undertake treatment. According to the stipulations il will he necessary lor the hospital to undertake the treatment of all patients from Timnru to the Bluff. The Superintendent had no da til as to the number of diabetes patients "ho would require treatment, but Dr Drennan had informed him that an extra ward would probably lie necessary. The Hospital Board resolved to complete the Alexander Ward without delay.
