Mr AY. J. Do tier. President of the British and Inter-colonial Exhibition, leaves for Wellington and Christchurch to-morrow on business matters connected with the largo undertaking to lie held here at the close of the year to celebrate the Westland Provincial Jubilee.
The death look place at Westport on Thursday of -Mr Fred J. Walker, lie has been employed on the wharf, worked as usual on Wednesday night and was apparently then in his usual health and spirits. Deceased had just a few moments got out of bod when he collapsed and passed away, the cause being heart failure. Mr Walker, who was a native of New South Wales, was 52 years of ago, 57 years of the period being spent in New Zealand. lie leaves a widow and familv.
The acoustic properties of the Soldiers’ Hall are said to be exceptionally good. Vocalists find it. a very orgy building to sing in. The building would ho an admirable locale for chamber concerts. In connection with tho interior decoration of the large hall, Mr J. Menzies, of Kaniori Forks, ono of tho returned soldiers, has offered to prepare a scheme for adoption, including the depicting of suitable scenes. Air Menzies has keen asked to carry out hi.s proposal, and it is probable, in conjunction with Air T. Kerr, tho painting and decoration work will bo arranged for as soon as the lining is considered sufficiently suitable for the purpose.

Tho sports dance at the Soldiers’ Hall on Saturday night was well attended, and passed off very successfully. The excellent floor, combined with the convenient arrangements with which the new hall is outfitted, were very favorably commented upon. Messrs Joyce (piano), Bonetti (violin), and Holland (saxaphone) supplied the music, and Mr Kearns was M.C. The assembly was under the direction of Mesdames Butlaml ami Morgan. These social gatherings will be held once monthly in aid of the R.S.A., building fund, the next evening being Saturday, August 18.

Repairs to Kanieri bridge were put in hand to-day, and it is notified that from Wednesday morning next traffic over the bridge will be interrupted. The repair party will arrange as far as convenient to permit local traffic to cross at stated intervals. Any vehicles using the bridge must not travel faster than three miles per hour.
There was an amusing incident at the Railway Department’s sale of unclaimed luggage at Auckland last week, when a tied-up biscuit tin was knocked down for a small sum. Hie purchaser (relates an Auckland exchange) bad tile misfortune to drop the tin. which was a misfortune for all in the room, because the contents consisted of eggs that had been laid over-long. The stench was so intense that the auctioneer parted with a. shilling to get the refuse removed.

The funeral took place at Greymouth yesterday aftenuxm of the Into Michael Hanrahaii. there being a very large number present, including many from Hokitika, and W uiuica. districts. The Hokitika Druids’ Ledge was also represented by a number of its members, the deceased having belonged to that (.edge for sonic years. The services at St. Patrick's Church, a»d at the cemetery were conducted by Rev. Father O’Began, assisted by Rev. Fattier Madden.

A somewhat peculiar accident occurred in Lichfield St., Christchurch on Friday afternoon. Mr Gee, a wellknown city contractor, was riding a
motor-cycle with side chair attached out of Messrs Jones Bros.’ yard when one side of the double swing gate suddenly closed and he was knocked off the mo-molor-cycle and hurled over the side chair on to the ground. Tile impact caused the rider in the course ol his fall to open the throttle of the machine and it shot straight across the street, jumped the fool path and crashed through tiie large window in the front of the promise* occupied by Mr J. H. Meagher, land agent. The girl in Mr Meagher’s office was sitting at her desk near the window, but was not hurl by the flying glass though she received a big fright- by the sound of the impact. Mr 1100 escaped with a slight cut on the forehead, received when he wathrown oil' the motor-cycle. The n-i----chino was undamaged and the owner was later able to ride it away.
