The Legislative Council sat to-day at 2.30 p.m. Tile Capture of Firds and Shooting (prohibtion) Fill was read a first time. The Samoa Amendment Fill was put through Committee without amendment, read a third time and passed. The Council rose at 2.-10 till 2.30 p.m. on Friday. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. WELLINGTON. July 17. Mr J. O’Brien, Member for Westland made a .strong plea in the House for the 'Westland district in regard to settlement and general development. He pointed out there is a large area of land there well adapted for stockraising and daily farming that is not yet properly utilised. There were, lie said, huge flats ami valleys witch could he .settled easily. The farmers on the West Coast never had any eneourage•u!out Horn tile present Government. They had been piiu-t Dally left alone when .settlers were asking for better mad a-.-cess. In South Westland .some of the very host land in New Zealand would not bring L‘3 an acre because there was no amass. Some people laid to hold 1 til-go areas in order to make a living, hut were willing Lo cut it up if only they were given access. The timber rosoutces of Westland were I'ractcally unlqnown. Land fit for farming should have the timber on it cut, although the sawmillers should not be allowed, to tear into it and make ii lit for nothing. If the West Coast were given roads, bridges and railway enmmunieation so that its coal, timber, and lit!-j,i products could he made available by the Otira Tunnel for the people of the Dominion, Westland people would lie willing to supply others, provided lliey were assisted Io get their produce out.

At the evening silting Mr Howard moved the second reading of Hie Worker**’ Compensation Act Amendment, which was. agreed to on the voices. The Justices of the Peace Amendment Fill (Mr Wilford) was put through the Committee stage without amendment, read a third time and passed. The House rose at 11.10 till 2.30 p.m.
