BACK CREEK NI'RSER V. fTo the Editor). •Sir.—We have had a good deal of'*' controversy over the Forestry Department taking the public tailing site at Back Creek, now occupied by a returned soldier, for Forestry purposes, but none linvo touched on this aspect of the matter. Had the soldier in occupation obtained aid from the Government undei the Soldiers’ Settlement Fund to assist hint in equipping lfis little dairy farm, the Government would have taken credit for placing a soldier on the land, and no doubt would protect him, thereby protecting their own funds. But as he went in on Ins own resources, taking his brother with him, asking no assistance from anyone, it now appears that attempts are now being made to practically evict him. though there is plenty of waste lands available for forestry purposes. I should like to know what the public for whom the soldier fought, think of this sort of thing. I kun etc.. IV. OWENS. Returned Soldier. Kanieri. July IGth. 1023.
