The adoption of Mr Mahoney's motion in the Federal House of Representatives. following upon the presentation of the Federal Public Works Committee's report dealing with the erection of a. Parliament House at Canberra. The Committee, .submitted nlteruale schemes, viz.,- (I) The nucleus of a permanent building; (2 the erection of a. provisional building away from the permanent site. The Committee leaves the filial decision to Parliament, but expresses the opinion that lack of comfort and conveniences would fie inseparable from a purely temporary Imildino. entailing an unproductive expenditure, which would he uneconomical ami inadvisable. Tt is estimated that the cost would be TIT-LOCO, and the work would fie capable of completion within two and a half years.
The report favours the first recommendation. which follows the line of the complete, original s •heme, and will entail a first co.-t of CIfU.OLtL The Committee also recommends completing the Yass-Can hei'l'a railway concurrently wirii the opening ol Parliament at Canberra.
A minority repm t is submitted by Air Blakeley, one of the members of the Committee. He points nut thin the adoption of the majority report would mean six or seven years helore the building was ready. If ilii- view icorrcct. the adoption of Air Alnhimey s motion cuts across the Committee's iecommendulions, ns it is practically impossible for the building ro lie in readiness in time for Parliament to assemble at Canberra after next election.
