The Animals Prnteclion and Game Amendment Bill, which proposes that instead of the Government deciding that birds shall he protected, the decision will lie with the Legislature, was read a second time At 3.15 p.m. the Council adjourned till 2.30 p.m. on Thursday. During the course of a .Ministerial statement, the Hon Down it- Stewart said that Parliament would he asked to ratify a proposal to impose an import duty on refined sugar of £2 IX Id per ton. This preference would enable ihe Colonial Sugar Coy’s Refinery at Auckland to continue operations: otherwise it would he unable to compete with Java sugar. The duty would he continued until September 1921. wlieii it could he reviewed. At 7.30 the debate on the Budget was opened by Mr Wili’ord, wdio was replied to by the Hon Mr Stewart.
