In connection with the motion curried on the Deputy-Mayor's casting vote, rescinding proportional representation for Christchurch City. Councillor Elizabeth Ah'Combs lias written to the Town Clerk pointing out that the resolution is ineffective as proportional representation cm only be adopted or revoked by a special order, and the Municipal Corporations Act. 1920. makes it cleat that carrying a resolution does imt constitute the making of a .special order. COUNTRY RACING CLUBS. WELLINGTON. July 11. At the conference of Country Racing ( lulis the annual ropnrf recommended tin- fixing of the headquarters in Wellington and appoint incut ol a permanent secretary. Fifty extra permits were required for racing and a bill providing for tho increase had been drafted. The report condemned the practice of holding meetings outside a club's own district, and pointed out this destroyed the argument so frequently ttscl that each district was entitled to have its own meeting at its own doors. The report was adopted and further hostile comment was made on the practice mentioned. A resolution was passed protesting attains! the action of the Racing Conference in imposing the penalties and conditions on persons who had been granied permission to enter raeoi ■ courses during a meeting. .Mr W. Jewell of Eo.xton, was elected President.
SHEA BURS' AWARD. BLENHEIM. July 11. The Arbitration Court, sitting here, eoii-idercd an application by the .Marlborough Shearers' Shed Hands Union for an award covering the rates of pay, bonus, etc, for shearers for the coining season. Mr Gravmller represented the Union, and .Mr B. Wanden and .Mr W. 11. .Nicholson for the employers. The Union claimed a II hour week with the rale of pay on tile Pillowing scale: —(a) for shearing by hand the rate shall not be less than 21 IPs per hundred, with rations and two pairs of shears for each 7flt) sheep, and one pair per 700 sheep when long wools are being shorn ; b) the rate for shearing by machine shall noi be less than 21 Ids per 100 with rations; (e) the above rates shall he increased by 5s per hundred when shearing merinos; til) the rate for shearing lambs shall not be L-ss than Cl Ills per hundred, with rations (this clause agreed to at silting of Conciliation Council); to) the rate for stud sheen shall be double the ordinary rate; (I) the rates for shearing all ranis io be double the ordinary rate; g all slice]) must be slagged be I ore coming into the sheds.
