Schilling, bon. see. of the AYaiho Gorge Ho-pital C <»»- mitteo : ” I am asked by niv committee to lay before you the urgency ot another nurse for South AVestland. U is now seven mouths or more since Sist.-r Gunn left, and only through Providence we are able to sav no serious accidents, or death through neglect of proper precautions, have occurred. As it is, we have shaved pretty close to some deaths here, which could have ts*en casitv prevented by having a nurse in the district. 1 think we are entitled to the expenditure ol at least jO9-;0 per year for medical assistance, viz., a nurse for South AVestland. Communication is no doubt fastei and easier since motor cars are .running in the northern part of our district, hilt still we are hours absent from any skilled help. And what, about the bar South-- Must these people, who pay a big proportion towards the upkeep of votir Board, be always obliged to put their bands into their pockets and travel weary miles to obtain assistance f Even if Hie above sum was not available, we think that for humanity's sake a skilled nurse should reside here at all times. Hoping that your Board will carefully consider the question of again, and as soon as possiMe, installing a nurse in our district.’

(In gar lie, where the railway disastei occurred, is a lonely spot in the pumice country that stretches from just below To Kuiti to Tauiiiarunni, a distance ol about forty miles. Te Kuiti is the last, big township on the line before this sparsely populated stretch is entered, and Oiigarue -tation is J 4 miles from To Kuiti. and 15 from Taumarumii. ]., u -as originally intended that Oiigarue should be the junction tor the St iat lord railway, hut the route of the latter was eventually slightly altered, and a. place called Okahukura, some few miles nearer Taumavuinii was eventually made the junction. Beyond tbe railway station more are very few buildings at Oiigarue. At this spot the line follows the Oiigarue river, and some of the curves are fairly pronounced, hut though l lie country is very fliable, like all the pumice hell, there are not many high hanks, and one would have thought it would he one of tin 1 last places where such an accident would he likely to be caused by a slip on t he line.
