The last few days have been glorious examples of winter weather. There have been cloudless days with glorious sunshine, while the nights have been cold, with heavy frosts. In the country the frosts have boon remarkably heavy, hilt the warm -on soon melts the frost, except in shady nooks, where it has been lying white for several clays.
On Wednesday evening next the Excelsior Football Club’s Ball take- place in the Town Hall and everything points t > it being a huge success. Overlanders on Saturday had a line though very cold trio. There was snow King all the way from Springfield to Otira. and the sight was a very licautiful one. The conches were a little late in getting to Arthur's Pa-s from Otira. and the return journey proved a difficult one. owing to the ice-hound condition of the roads, making the Gorge a trying journey, and causing considerable delay. As a result, the Otira train to Greymouth was a couple of hours late in leaving and ran late accordingly into Greyinoutli. Hokitika not being reached till about 10.30 p.m., the train to Ross lasing also eoriespondingly late.

The Railway Traffic Manager at Grcymooth (Mr Morgan) asked as to fares and freights on the Arthur's Pass tunnel route, stated that tho fares would be at tho ordinary rate. That meant that the faro to Christchurch, from Greymouth, single would be:—First class. 22s 3d ; second class, 15s 2d. Tho freight through the tunnel, while under the control of the Public Works Department, would definitely be on tiie throe-sectional basis, and after that the ordinary mileage basis would prevail. A Christchurch paper says:—The retail price of the principal packet blends of tea has been reduced by fourponcc per lb. in consequence of the removal of the duty. On Friday a merchant stated that the reduction, which amounted to one penny more than the amount of the duty, took effect on Wednesday as soon as the removal of the duty took place.
