HARBOR MATTERS.
CONFERENCE WITH BOARD. At the conclusion 01' tlie Harbour Board meeting last evening, the Board conferred with representatives from tiie Local Bodies’ Conference in regard to improvements to tho harbour. The delegates consisted of Messrs Berry, Jeffries, Duff, Butler and others. A general discussion ensued, each agreeing on tlio necessity for some steps to be taken to ensure the reopening of the port, and what form the movement should take. Mr Jeffries stated that no good would result til! they helped themselves and got a steamer of their own to trade to Wellington and other ports. It was pointed out the bar bad been in good order for months, but that attention would have to be given to the berthage at the wharf which had very considerably shoaled. Mr Butler pointed out that bis firm would be prepared to ship timber from the port if the port were made workable. A general discussion followed v ami the conference then adjourned, to meet in a couple of weeks or so. concrete proposals then to be discussed.
