HOKITIKA ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.

The revived Orchestra! Society made a very welcome appeal a nee at. the Town Hall hist evening. There was a eiowdcd attendance el iho public, many having to -t nnl. 'I be orchestra was under the baton el Mr V . h. Perry and bad. a very friendly and cordial welcome at the ha nils of the audience. The programme naturally was mainly instrumental, and was a very varied one in the <.lioiee oj selections. It was interspo:sed Ly instrumental solos and ducts, and some humorous songs anl dialogues. 'The concerted numbers by the orchestra were tendered with a measure of success which indicated attentive practice. Many ol the performers were new to public appearances, hut notwithstanding, all showed evidence of a desire to achieve the best. Tlie several selections were on the whole very acceptable and the public will lie glad to bear the orchestra aeain. Certainly the applause was

very generous and the performers should be encouraged to continue their good work, and as tune goes on produce more ambitious productions. Sonic of the instrumental ]>erfo;merx did most creditably. ’1 he pianoforte duet-' were particularly well received. the performers surprising the audience with their capabilities. The humorous items were contributed in the main by a visiting gentleman wlm was very much at homo ou the stage, and who caused much laughter among the audience. The night’s programme was a very full one, rather long in fact for a '.'inter session, but all through there was hearty applause, and every encouragement given to the performers. All concerned with the revival of the Orehesirn are to be congratulated on tlie. success of their efforts. Such an organisation is a necessary adjunct, to the town, and is worthy of general encouragement.
