June 40 A message from Springfield, Illinois, stated that a committee of the House of Representatives which has been investigating the causes of the Herrin masacre, resulting in over a score of deaths, presented its report. The report condemns the acts of all the public officials concerned, c=peciallv the two commanders of the State Militia who failed to despatch troops to Herrin, although they were allegedly .aware of the critical situation. The sheriff and his deputies are branded as irresponsible and unworthy to hold office because of their Sailure to take timely preventive action. The report also condemns the owners of the mine, when the massacre occurred, for hiring armed men to guard the strike breakers.
