RETURNED SOLDIERS’ BALL AT ROSS.

There was a very large assemblage at the Ti tara Hall last night, when the animal hall under the auspices of the Returned Soldiers Association was held. Visitors were present- in considerable numbers, both South Westland and Hokitika Rung well represented by contingents. The returned men were present in force. The hall was very pleasingly decora loti with greenery, and lit. by electric light from the municipal plant, presented a striking appear-

ance. A local orchestra of several instruments supplied tin* music. Mr R. ( herl io. assisted by Mr 1.. Adamson, controlled the floor, which at times was very crowded. A ladies committee headed hv Airs .8. I‘. Evans (Mayoress) directed the supper service, which "as sumptuously served. A large number oi ihe patrons were in fancy costume, and the judges awarded the prizes for the most original lady and gentleman's cos!nine to Miss E. Mitchell (I’VrngTGvo Sawmill), and Mr W. Henderson (Soldier Settler) respectively— a decision which was applauded loudiy. Mr J. A. Allan, President, of the Association presented the prizes, a pair of vases to the lady, and a pocket book io tile gentleman, the recipients being heartily acclaimed by the approving audience. Mr Allan took occasion to thank all who contributed to the success “I tbe evening. Special thanks were accorded the billies committee. the orchestra and tin* visitors.
