Now that Exhibition matters are beins "'ell focussed in other parts of the Coast, it will not bo out of place to suggest that tho should ho t&hen ”P locally so |int
County area and interim Boroughs should lie well represented iri the West (.oast court. In the space plan there is provision for such a court nt the main entrance, and the organisation of a good local exhibit .should he taken in hand without delay. This is not a task with which the Exhibition Council should be saddled, but should ho the duty of a local committee representative of the County and Boroughs. The local bodies might well bo called upon to assist in this matter, and could aid a committee set up for the purpose with the finance to provide a display which will he arresting and instructive to visitors attending the Exhibition. If the district its a whole wishes to secutc prospective value from the Exhibition, it should display its wares, indicate its resources, show forth its scenic glories, and supply information in regard to land settlement, industrial possibilities, mineral deposits and so forth, to attract additional population, capital and enterprise. Through that channel lasting good could he done and it is of the greatest importance the work should be well done, and so attain the best results from such a golden opportunity for advertisement.
Tub faith in the future of the dairying industry in northern Westland is well exemplified by the factory being established in Hokitika. It is possible now to form some idea of the dimensions of the large building being erected, the base of which is now being outlined for the laying of the foundation. We look forward to this factory proving of the greatest value to the district. It will bo the largest of its kind either on too West Coast or north of Cliri~tchurch. Already it is proving an asset to the town, as an application has been received for cool storage space from a. large firm operating in New Zealand, which evidently purposes to extend its business here. That is only one phase of its work, for from enquiry which is being made from other sources, it would appear that within eighteen months or two years a bacon factory will be operating in conjunction with the dairy factory. The work of erection is now proceeding apace, indicating the earnestness of the promoters to lie ready for the coming season. The factory will be in operation well in advam-e of the Exhibition, irom which a considerable source of income will be derived by the means of the supply of various commodities the factory ' will have for sale. So centrally situated and in touch with the rail north and smith, and lorry transport for the inland trade, the factory should from the outset, piove a very useful indnstrial development.
