HOKITIKA (primary teams) This game was played on Cass Square on Saturday morning, the players being limited to 8 stone and under. The visitors had the best of the game throughout and won by 1 I points to 3. For Hokitika, a try was obtained by Evans. HOKITIKA HIGH SCHOOL V. GREY TECHNICAL SCHOOL. This game took place at 1.30 p.m. and provided an excellent ourtain-rai-cr. The local team showed to great advantage, the hacks .Mason (2) and ’Vegan opening out tho play in good -tyh'. The forwards were fairly evenly martbed. but the lot al backs govt, a capita) exhibition of pa.-sing. theii handling being good, but at times their kicking lacked proper direction, and one or two hung on a hit Loo long at times. VYogntt stored almost at the start of play, and another try also came before half-time. In the second hall four tries were notched, the -•core being 0 tries (18 points) to nil. Tries were scored by Wognn (2), Kelly Pierson and Mason. Mr W. A. Wilson was referee. WESTLAND V. GREY. The game was played under good conditions though the ground was heavy in places, hut darkness intervened before the game ended ami for the last quarter of an hour it was impossible to distinguish the players across the Held. Westland kicked olf from the southern end, and the return went to Robertson who opened a passing run, McKay anti Palmer taking part. Then Moviiiltan took the play lo Russell who stopped the advance. A forward rush ltd by Willoughby and Walker was stepped by Nelson, who found the line at. the centre. Russell showed out ill stopping a ret I rush anti then Stephens took the ball through to Ids Westland namesake, who found the line at me centre with a neat kick. Erom a billowing st rum Grey got the hall smartly and Ileaphy sc.nl it out. It passed through three hands, hut- .Jamieson missed Ids |:n.-s and the opening was spoilt. A black rush saw Alouatt stop it. .McKay (the Westland capt.) broke away finely, but Nelson got the ball away to Ross who inis-kirkod into toucli. Then from a line out Coghlan sent out the oval to Alt Kay. anti Palmer. Aloynihnn and Ross handling the ball went to the Grey 2d. There was an exchange of kicks and then a high kirk saw MeKav run and take a ball on the full, securing a beautiful mark, at the same time a red plover oil him and went out for a lime with Ilie impact. The Grey then attacked. Hurley, Afotiato and (Vi lalloran taking tinplay to the AVeslland line, a force resulting. Returning to the attack, the hall went to the line where Stevens saved nicely at the corner. A free kick relieved AYestland hut Jamieson kicked hard and another tureo resulted. The Grey forwards came away following the kick out. Dewar and O'Neill leading, hut Ha gar and Alovnihan stopped them and play was near the 25 Hag when half-time sounded. The second half opened with MeKav starting a passing run that took play to Grey quarters, hut the opening was lost through the hull stopping in a mud-hole. Then Palmer boat his opponent, hut hung on a. triile too long. Nelson failed to handle cleanly, hut Russell saved. A Grey rush was stopped and then Hagnr. 'Walker and Churchouse put in a fine loose rush that was nicely stopped hv (moduli. Ileaphy and Alouatt showed out. but Cunningham stopped them, but in ragged play tho ball came hack to Westland quarters. The ball came smartly back. Robertson making a line run to the line where he was brought down. The play settled down near the corner, several tight serums taking place. Then Coghlan got the ball from the scrum and it went to Palmer who heat his man and gave it. to Robertson, who made a neat dash and scored near the corner. Ross made a poor attempt from a difficult angle. 9-0. . , n . ... Grey attacked from the kick-oft till Ross stopped them nicely, but Nelson returned to Westland 25. prom a line out TTagnr and Walker broke away, but Jamieson came hack with a loose rush that Stevens stopped nicely. Then the play went back to AYestland quarters, but Stevens stopped the rush in fine style, but a heavy kick forced AYestland. From the kick out l’almer passed to Robertson wlm took play to Grey 25. The play went hack to the centre and then a fine passing run saw Coghlan. ALaekay and Palmer handle, but the latter tried to do" too much -under the posts and passed too late, a fine opening being lost. Grey forwards broke away and the ball went to the other end. but’ Aloynibau brought the ball back with a fine run. Russell broke back and looked dangerous, but Robertson brought him down. Then the hall came back, forwards and hacks taking part and Afoynilian was pushed out near the corner Hag. A Grey rush relieved, hut the local forwards came hack on the other side of the field, and the hall went over the line, and in a rush for it, Robertson was successful, scoring a somewhat lucky try. The kick at goal hv Ross was again unsuccessful. 12-0. *
With a quarter of an hour to go the light had failed, and it became increasingly difficult to see the play. Grey attacked and tho play hovered between the half-way and tho AYestland line for tho rest of the game, hut there v.iis no further score, and AYestland Mere the winners by 12 point.; to nil. For the winners McKay stood out. as he was far and away the best back on the ground. He is a fine dashing player, a sure handler, a line kick, passes well and opened out tile play in splendid style, equally good in attack and defence. CoghTnn at half did well, opening up the play at every opportunity. and going down well lo the opposing forwards. Palmer showed lo advantiig," in the open play, hut at times tried to do too much. Robertson and ALiynihan each did good work, but at times made seine rather bad errors'. Stevens at full put in a good afternoon’s work and tackled cleanly when the necessity came his awav. The forwards were a solid lot and did well all through. Though they hardly got their share of the hall in the sc rum they held their opononts in the tight, and badly heat them in the loose. I lea'led by Hagai- on the wing they followed up well and spoilt, the opposition time and again. The three tlari Mari plavers, Jugoxilh, Jugieh. and Churchouse played fine games, and were well supported by Carter. Walker. Cunningham and Willoughby. Imt this section of the play was very weak. For Grey, the whole of the hacks except Gootlall and Heupli.v niis-od many passes, and lest much ground. McGregor (President) of the AYestland Sub-Union) presented the Pittman Shield to the captain of the winning team (Air McKay), congratulating his Irani on their success, which was thoroughly deserved on the day s play.
