AEROPLANE CRASHES
TWO KILLED ANI) ONE INJURED. AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. 'Received this day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, June 2-1. The first air race this year was marred bv ft serious Occident. The race was a point to point handicap for a Challenge Cup presented by Lord Edward Grosvenor, over a four hundred mile course from I.ynipne over Croyden to Birmingham, Bristol and back to Crovdcn and I.ynipne.
The race was limited to British machines not exceeding 150 horsepower.
Nine started and the winner was Lieut. I.ongtou, piloting a Sopwith Gnu of 110 horse-power, bis time being 280 minutes -15 sees. Linklcr, flying a Babj \vro of thirty-five horse power was third. Major Foot, scratch, flying a Stanley White hundred horse-power monoplane, nose-dived and crashed at an isolated spot on a country road, near Chertsej, on the outward journey. When found the body was charred, being unreoogniasblo. The machine was burnt. PARIS, June 2-L Jean Casalc, a well-known “Ace” holding the French height record, crashed near Compiegne and was killed. Sicnor Mcrcanti, Italian Under-Sec-retary for Aviation, left Turin in an aeroplane which he was piloting himself, bound for lxtndon, crashed near Aix Les Bains, but ho was net seriously hurt.
